Problems with Genetic Engineering
- GE organisms are unpredictable and their release irreversible
- GE organisms can lead to new allergies, can cross with wild relatives and create hybrids that are resistant to certain traits (eg herbicide resistant)
- GE crops themselves pose significant weed threats, and could impact negatively on our indigenous flora and fauna
- We don't know what the long-term impact of releasing GE into the environment will be
- GE crops will contaminate conventional and organic crops. This means that we'll lose the ability to sell guaranteed GE free and organic produce, which is currently collecting a premium internationally
- GE crops are being globally rejected
- Companies and governments will not insure against GE. This means that if something goes wrong, society and the environment pays the price.
